US and British bombing of Iraq deplored

Sinn Fein TD Caoimhghin O Caolain has described as ``deplorable'' the US and British bombing of Iraq. He has called on the Irish government to oppose the action.

He said:

``This attack is utterly deplorable and should be opposed in forthright terms by the Irish government.

``War is again being brought to the Gulf by the US and Britain who in the past have armed and sponsored Saddam Hussein. The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation estimated in 1995 that 560,000 Iraqi children had died as a result of the Gulf War and the continuing sanctions. Tens of thousands more have died since then.

``As former Taoiseach Albert Reynolds has recently pointed out these sanctions are criminal and should be ended. That is the way to a peaceful resolution of the situation in the Gulf - not these bombing attacks on the civilian population of a sovereign state.''
