Bombing of Iraq must cease immediately

Sinn Fein President Gerry Adams MP has called on the United States and Britain to bring an immediate end to their bombing of Iraq. He said that the UN should use all diplomatic and peaceful means at their disposal in order to aovercome the current crisis.

Mr. Adams said:

``Previous military action against Iraq resulted in the deaths of thousands of aIinnocent people, including women and children, and did not result in the bringing about of a long term solution to the situation in that region.

``The trade sanctions which followed the Gulf War are having a detrimental effect on the lives of ordinary Iraqi citizens and should be ended. The World Health Organisation has recently stated that up to 6,000 children are dying every month as a direct result of the sanctions.

``I am calling on the United States and Britain to bring an immediate end to the bombing of Iraq. The UN should resume with the process of dialogue as quickly as possible in order to move beyond this crisis and find a long term pa1solution to the situation in the Gulf.''
